Shaving Soaps and Creams
Good quality shaving soaps and creams are full of natural ingredients that nourish your face and leave you smelling manly. These products might not be as cheap as the canned stuff, but just a dab will create more than enough lather for even a big job. They also leave your face feeling protected and hydrated.
A good quality shaving soap or cream has ingredients that produce a rich, moist lather that softens the beard and moisturizes the skin. While you’re shaving, ingredients like oils provide lubrication so your razor glides over your skin.
A good shaving lather can eliminate or reduce the need for other products like pre-shave conditioners, after shave balms, moisturizers and toners.
We can’t emphasize it enough. Avoid the stuff you squirt out of a can. It’s nothing but a combination of chemicals that dry out your skin. So that a razor won’t feel so harsh, some brands actually contain face-numbing agents like Lidocaine. If you don’t believe us, check the ingredients.
Here’s a story to tell your buddies. Until recently, you’d have found one chemical listed on the label named “nonoxynol-9” (“N-9”). You may have heard of N-9. It’s a spermicide as well as being a man-made chemical. Alas, they didn’t put N-9 in shaving cream to ward off pregnancy caused by acts involving your beard. Thank goodness, Gillette found a replacement for N-9.
Some barbers recommend using shaving oil on your face before you shave. We’re not talking baby oil. Shaving oils are designed to soften the whiskers and not make them greasy. This helps the razor glide over your skin for an irritation-free shave. Shaving oil applied to your beard before combing also helps with detangling.
The process is easy. Wet your face, apply the oil, comb it through, and then apply your shaving cream. You can use shaving oil on dry or wet whiskers prior to combing.
Aftershaves are made to condition the skin and help reduce skin irritation. Read the ingredients on the label. Your lotion should not contain alcohol, which dries out the skin and is painful when applied over cuts and nicks. Look for soothing ingredients like vitamin E and aloe. Always dry your hands and face before putting on aftershave.
